The Legend of Lake Batur
Long Time ago there [1was] a giant named Kebo Iwo. He was
big, tall and strong. He [2ate
] very much. He [3would] get
very angry if his favourite food was not well prepared.
Once, during the famine, all
of the rice barns were empty. The people of the village [4could] not provide him with enough food.
Kebo Iwo was very angry, he ate everything he found and [5destroyed] the village. The people [6were]
frightened.
They assembled and [7discussed] how to
ease Kebo’s anger. The leader of the village [8went] to meet Kebo Iwo, He [9told] the saint that people would provide him
with enough food provided that he rebuilt the peoples’ houses and dig a well.
The next day he [10began] to work. He immediately
rebuilt houses and temples and dug a well. The water at the well blowed up and
formed a lake called Lake Batur, meanwhile the amount of soil formed a mountain
called Mount Batur.
